*Please pardon the un-styled mess why I am rethinking and re-designing my blog!*

Computer – check. Photoshop – check. Lots of free time – check. It seems that this is all that is necessary to call yourself a ‘designer’ these days. I believe that there is far more to a designer than software, computers and free time. Designers should have critical thinking skills, understanding of design principals, knowledge of grid systems, typography and much more.

Right on with the post and article. I have been in the situation both in new client meetings and with current clients who drag out the 'in-house' or 'contract designer' talent. People who happen to own an old copy of photoshop or dreamweaver and are now designers. One time in the midst of an annual report project it was the CEO's wife who had an MBA and a mac. Painful. I don't think you need to have a degree or formal training to be a great designer – but you do need an strong understanding or design principles, tools and techniques.
