Hands On With The Magic Mouse

The estimated time to read this article is 2 minutes

I had a chance to stop by the Apple Store today to check out all the new sparkling goodies that were recently added to their lineup. I’ve been a bit disappointed that they didn’t have the magic mice out for sale, but they did have them hooked-up (literally) to some of the iMacs. I had a chance to play with one for a few minutes and managed to snag some pics and video.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

The magic mouse felt nice in my hand and was much lighter than I originally thought it would be (its basically just the weight of the batteries inside + plastic.)  The mouse felt like it fit well in my hand and I should mention that I have small hands. It also has an incredibly low profile, which looks cool and felt alright, but I was standing while using the computer. I’m wondering how this would affect ergonomics over time. The two black bars on the bottom of the mouse do a decent job of stabilizing during the two finger swipe, but it took some getting used to. I was swiping too hard at first and moving the mouse. I’m not sure if I will end up using the swipe.

The feature I was most looking forward to is the 360 scroll. While using safari I noticed when I flicked my finger on the mouse the scrolling accelerated much like the iPhone. It really is a please to scroll without that stupid little ball! Overall I was pretty pleased with my 5 minute session with the Mighty Mouse and I’m glad that I purchased one!

  1. Will says:

I’d like to know if you are able to “hold down” the left and right “buttons” at the same time.
That’s pretty much essential for a game that I play a fair bit, so that would be a show-stopper for me if I can’t do that. I’m assuming that there’s a “middle-click” option too.

  2. How did you purchase one if they weren’t out for sale but only on display?

  3. They look pretty cool. I always gum up that little ball. I have to clean out the mouse every few weeks to get it working again.

  4. Hi Todd

I didnt purchase the mouse at the store, i purchased it online and am currently stalking the UPS guy waiting for my delivery :)

  5. Nice hands on. I’ll be picking one up soon! :D

  6. I stopped in at the store as well last week to try it out. I’m pretty sure I’m going to get one. I’m a bit worried about it, though, as you mentioned. On the one hand (har har), my scrolling finger is all raw from the ball (I have one at home and one at work), so not having that evil contraption on this one was really nice, it was a good experience for the most part. However, It is a REALLY REALLY short mouse, so I’m quite concerned with hand strain. I could feel it a bit just from the short time I was using it, but also haven’t tried it sitting down.

I’m hoping they’ll be at the store today. If you project out the estimated delivery on the site, it seems as though be shipping out today if I would have purchased it online.

  7. WANT. MINE. DELIVERED. The suspense killing you yet? Your “hands-on” makes me all the more giddy…..

  8. sounds interesting, i still dont understand how the scrolling works though! suppose i need to see one in practice. the old mac mouse is a bit dainty for me.

  9. I am up in the air. Great post and I have since gone to the store to try it out. But after their last ‘mouse’ iteration (2 which crapped out on me), I am a bit leery.
