Reading time: 1 – 2 minutes

Its time for question of the week! I’m going to post a short little audio clip asking you a question. Feel free to chime in and let me know what you think! I’d love to get a discussion going on in the comments!
This week we are discussing what you do outside of the realm of design for fun or for a hobby.

When not designing or running my Web design and development business with my brother, I try to stay as far away from the computer as possible to stay sane (haha). Spending quality time with my wife and two little daughters occupies most of my spare time, but i try to do a lot of outdoor activities since I also live in the country (grilling, yard work and such). Throw in a daily workout every morning and my daily schedule is booked!

When I’m not working full-time as a designer/front-ender or freelancing, I am spending time with my husband and 2 and a half year old daughter. Being that it is summer, we spend a lot of time with extended family, cooking out, going to the lake, going to our Camp in the Adirondacks, and lots of other non-computer related activities. I would love to spend non-work time designing and playing around in illustrator, or re-designing my website which is currently sporting Chris Coyier’s WPTypo theme. Lovely theme, but pretty lame of me to not have something original to me. But all the mom, wife, and household stuff takes up pretty much my non-work part of the day/week. And I love it.

Outside of design and away from computer, I’m usually doing something with my husband. I just recently moved so I don’t have friends to hang with.
I also love love love to belly dance and sometimes do a little bit of ballet. Lastly, I enjoy sketching from anime characters to still life objects.

It’s certainly tough to remove yourself (and brain) from thinking about your profession when you are passionate. However, it’s also quite healthy and I find the best things for me are exercise (running usually, and sometimes biking) help to reduce stress and burnout. I also love spending time with my wife, working in the yard, and catching up on TV shows/movies.

when im not working… hmm… and not on the computer… i like to read, spend time with family and friends, my boyfriend likes to cook and while i don’t like cooking I enjoy passing him ingredients so it feels like im doing something other than waiting to eat
, I watch a lot of movies, i love “so you think you can dance” and get together with girlfriends every wednesday to watch it, i love going on walks, visiting various city parks and just chilling out in the sunshine, going to shows and listening to music, im part of a mixed tape club – so I enjoy working on my mixes, designing cool packaging for them.. and …oh .. wait, did i just say design!? DOH!

Were you at an airport recording this? lol.
Anyway. When I’m not designing I am usually with friends doing something, playing video games online (cod4, gow2, etc.), or some sort of art. So no matter what, I am always some how still a geek in whatever I’m doing.
But designing takes up most of my day :/ And I love it!

I write and illustrate a comic series called Green Corner. It’s challenging to do, which makes it a great learning experience. Using a fantasy setting also makes it a lot of fun
I also play video games, read, sketch, and go to the odd sci-fi/anime convention.
My cat also enjoys distracting me

I also find it really hard to get my mind off of design. I’ve been trying really hard lately though because I’ve been starting to feel tired and I know that’s related to not being able to turn my mind off.
I love to read and have been allotting time every day for that which has been really nice. I also love to get outside and hike or just walk around town. We live in such a beautiful place and it’s so relaxing.
Other than that I usually draw in my moleskines. Let myself work on art without rules for a while – or play video games.

I’m trapped in a little design bubble at the moment, but it’s because I choose to be. I’m in a phase of sketching while watching the TV or reading design books (I really ought to stop buying books).
However, when I manage to remove myself from designy type stuff, I do enjoy a bit of airsofting, being distracted by my 2 dogs or the obligatory drinking with friends

Hey, I run aswell sometimes.. it is very good for clearing your head and stuff..
Also, I go out (like clubbing) maybe two or three times a week, which is really good for inspiration actually..
also, loads of wandering around.. if I ever have a few hours, I’ll just like lazily wander around the city or beach or something, and it’s again, really good for inspiration, and clearing your head..
other than that, maybe a few trips to the gym now and then, love music and play traditional Irish music.

Nora Reed says:
I often find that the other things we do aside from designing are truly our inspiration for design. I enjoy running when the weather is warm because the days can be so beautiful, plus it gives me a lot of time to think creatively and come up with new ideas. I also enjoy silly things like board games and nintendo wii.

Well, I’m an amateur photographer, so when I’m not designing I try to find some time to shoot some photos, cause sometimes it’s the most relaxing thing I can do.

Does painting count as being away from design? I’d like to start doing more of that. In high school, my life revolved around painting, but when I got into college, it became more virtual. Now that I’m out of college and about to start doing full-time design work in an office, I want to get back to doing more “me” things at home. That includes painting, playing with the puppies, and just getting out more on the town. Once this heat cools down, I’d also love to go camping more. I love to hike and I definitely don’t get to do that enough.

in this economy – it is seemingly harder to have ANY life outside any paying job!
i like to take short trips to break away from the madness!

When I’m not doing my freelance work (which is sometimes until the early hours of the morning) I like to have a hit of tennis with mates. Also every Saturday I usually go out and have a few drinks and not think about work at all.

I just discovered this place, is a drawing workshop (once a week)
http://www.thedrawingclub.com/home.asp
I really like drawing, and painting, but I couldn’t really pick that as a career
that’s why i went for graphic design and arts
Sometimes I think I spend too much time on the computer and I forgot how much fun is to be involve in this kind of things!
Cheers

Unfortunately I don’t give design enough of my attention. I work a full time job that has absolutely nothing to with design and I work a weekend job that allows me to be outgoing, loud and play with little tykes. But when I’m not doing design, I play video games, watch movies/TV series (I love movie/TV marathons!), play with my foster pets and hang out with friends.
