I would say that being in the advertising and design business does help to pull back the curtain on a lot campaigns that are out there. I can spot a gimmick from a mile away. But CLEVER advertising and marketing, firms that think outside of the box to get their clients noticed are another story. If I see an ad that I think is clever, or unique, I almost want to reward the advertiser’s creativity with my business.

  2. An interesting experiment that answers your question…

  3. I tend to buy things just because they’re well designed/advertised, so i think in a way i’m even more of a sucker for advertisement for being a designer. I adore Target for this reason, and i like to choose my alcohol purely by its packaging, for example.

  4. I’m a sucker for good advertising.

  5. Great question. I use to think as a designer I was immune because I paid more attention to how it was designed than what it was advertising. But then I moved to LA, and now I want to see movies and tv shows I didn’t want to see before because of the ads. I also noticed terribly bad ads for clothing companies that I will never shop at because of their bad ads. I think it’s harder to appeal to a designer but when you do it can really work.

  6. I think this kind of advertising ends up having a subconscious effect… the more we see an ad for something, the more likely we are to try/buy it (I think).

Designers are more in-tune to things and we can appreciate a well-designed ad or sign with nice typography now… I don’t remember what it was like before I became “aware.”

I can also agree with what Aaron said about not wanting to buy something because the design is so bad. Likewise, I’m a sucker for beautiful packaging, sometimes even if I have no need for the product.

It might be nice if a lot of outdoor advertising goes away and more advertising is done online… then again, there’s an old saying about “be careful what you wish for.” :P

  7. Just like Steph Adamo, I too am a sucker for good advertising, branding. Target is wonderful and I wish I was smart enough to figure out why our brains make us do such things, such as buying something because the label is great.

As far as effectiveness, I really think most people are ad blind in everyday life and on-line. My example from home is I have a dvr and I cannot tell you the last time I watched a commercial. I know, sad but true. I guess its our jobs as creatives to creatively come up different ways to get attention.

    As always great post!

    thanks

  8. Every week I pick up the advertiser (a newspaper where I live) and when I have a few minutes I go through it all, like analysing all the different ads (there’s hundreds), just because I love being critical, and I find it really helps for inspiration aswel.

But ya I agree with everyone above aswel, I am a huge sucker for good, clever advertising. I got a brochure from a printer in the post the other day, and I’ve already sent out a few things to be done with them, because it was just so well designed, and really quirky aswel.

I suppose for printing services and things, I do feel more confident getting things done in a place that I know appreciates design, and therefore has a good variety of decent promotional material for themselves.

  9. Agreed….Sucker for good ads myself….But I love a good laugh at the bad ones!

  10. I think we all become suckers for good ads: the ones that are well crafted, use good skills (like photography, typography, design, great text), and also for one other thing: ads that don’t lie. Those billboards with the brand and some stupid claim don’t sell neither for designers nor for other people, but they’re there because a whole industry of spam and indifference was created.

  11. For me it’s hard to be convinced of a product and its advertisement enough for me to go and buy it. I tend to appreciate its idea and design (That’s if its good) rather than move on what I’ve been sold.
