Great tip! Might I offer one small suggestion?
If you hold down Alt (Option on the Mac) with Shift while drawing the ellipse/circle it will draw from the center. With smart guides on, you can “snap” to the exact center of the gear to create the hole with one small step. No alignment is necessary that way. Could save some time…

I’m on my Windows desktop right now, but as far as i remember holding alt makes it draw the circle from center, and holding shift makes it do a constrained (1:1) circle.
Using smart guides combined with drawing the circle constrained and from center would lessen the number of steps quite dramatically.
