I was at Target this past weekend ogling over lovely packaging when I found Mt Dew and Pepsi throwback! Looks like they are taking a cue from the General Mills retro cereal packaging! I was a hardcore Mt. Dew drinker as a kid and its cool to see the vintage packaging again. For some reason I only thought of taking pictures with my cell phone instead of actually BUYING some…The new ‘throwback’ is supposed to be made with real sugar instead of that corn syrup crap!
Pics I snagged at target:

Really….really retro Mountain dew packaging! Way before my time!

Check out the progression of the Mt. Dew logo from the 70′s to today:

Check out this mid 90′s Arabic Mt Dew can:

I used to buy glass bottles of like these at the gas station when I was a kid!!! And….anyone remember mellow yello???

Not sure why anyone would want this…but apparently Mt Dew code red has chap stick…

And last but not least…there are aparently other ‘perverted’ flavors of mt dew out there (besides the red and orange crap…) who knew! I’m totally a purist when it comes to Mt Dew – original only please!!!

What do you guys think?
Are you digging the retro packaging? Is this just a silly marketing ploy or is it cool? Chime in and let me know what you think!

Great post! I really like the old hillbilly graphics on the original packaging. The old logo is stronger than the new one, I think.

Nice post! Now I think I will just have to go out and find myself a Mountain Dew. Not an easy task here in Berlin Germany.

I actually like the throwback designs over the new rebranding! In the spirit of throwback designs I thought these retro cereal boxes were worth sharing: http://www.thedieline.com/blog/2009/02/general-mills-retro-cereal-boxes.html

Both the Pepsi and Dew Throwback taste WAY better! The Pepsi kinda tastes like RC (Royal Crown Cola) Which I LOVE!

I agree with Antonea. The new designs for the Pepsi Co. products (Mt.Dew, Sierra Mist, Pepsi) are horrible. They should honestly think about using the throwback designs as the new official designs. At the very least they should fix the Pepsi fat man error.

I’d much prefer they jumped backward in time as far as branding goes as opposed to the new branding craziness that was unleashed a few months back. I’m also curious to see how the marketing of this goes. If one of their main marketing points is that it’s “made with real sugar” than how, when this promotion is done, are they going to market their corn-syrup based product as equal? Hmmm… just seems a bit odd to me that they’d market one product against their own. Anyone else see that?
Great article- thanks!

What do you mean “remember MelloYello”? We still get MelloYello in Minnesota-I’m drinking one right now!

Stephen, hopefully they’ll change all their corn-syrup products to real sugar. Wouldn’t that be nice!

I think that the throwback is a great idea. It is so neat to see a different kind of packaging on the soda aisle. I look forward to seeing it at my local stores and seeing the impact that it will have on the beverage market.

Is most of the soda sweetened with corn syrup in the US? I always wondered why it seemed to taste a little different. I believe we still use sugar here in Canada.

I really don’t care about the logo, I am happy to see a soda I love without that nasty high fructose corn syrup crap in it
