At least for the brush or gradient tool, you can also type in a 2 digit opacity.

With brush selected, simply pressing '2' will set it at 20%. If you type in 2-4 quickly enough, it will be set ant 24% opacity.

I'd imagine it might work like that for layers too.

very cool. I had to hold down shift w/ the layer selected for it to work - but then also discovered i could hold shift and + or - to change through the various transparency options! nice.

Nice. It's always fun to stumble onto something that is extremely useful. I'm sure there are a multitude of other little tricks that are not widely known.

David Leininger got it right! It doesn't change the LAYER opacity when you use those specific tools that he listed. I just found out that it actually changes the opacity of each specific brush. For example, if you have the brush tool active and hit a number 1-9, it will change the opacity of the brush, not the layer!

Great post. Really nice to know, I hadn't heard that one yet. One thing my buddy and I did find out is, this tip doesn't work with certain tools active.

brush tool
clone tool
history brush tool
eraser tool
gradient / Paint bucket tool
the burn / burn / sponge tool
