*Please pardon the un-styled mess why I am rethinking and re-designing my blog!*
In these modern times users have learned and adapted and mice have evolved this nifty thing called a scroll wheel. Users have learned to scroll down a page for more content. The concept of having content “Above The Fold” may not really exist anymore (some say). Horizontal websites maybe be outside the usability realm for some, but with some nifty javascript, normal scrolling behavior can be adapted easily.
This site uses some sort of javascript library to scroll the content where the orange arrow points to. Pretty slick!
This site makes an interesting use of the “radio” dial. Check it out as you scroll – you change stations!
Benek’s site is clean and straight forward. It uses a simple javascript to allow horizontal scrolling (js file can be viewed here: http://benekdesign.com/js/thw.js )
Interesting, slightly ugly, blog.
Synthetic has some interesting js scrolly action when you click on the colored bars at the bottom of the page.
This website has a little playful blue line that guides you through the site.

While it is going to take time for users to adjust, I cannot WAIT for horizontal scrolling to become a non-issue.
There will be a watershed moment when there is an easily added, widely accepted snippet of code that takes your scrolling mouse wheel from “down” to “right”. Mark my words!

I think horizontal scrolling can be great for highly visual content like portfolios. It can be a neat way to stand out. However, I believe there is strong cultural bias against side scrolling for many people who read right-left and top-down. This goes beyond just web conventions. I would never suggest it for a text heavy site.
